’s “Scream”, a satirical take on the slasher flicks, helped expose the tropes often overused in the genre. Post “Scream”, the slasher movies moved away from the mainstream. The 2000s witnessed the emergence of innovative slashers. It not only gave us a more sinister take on the classic villains like Leatherface and Michael Myers, but we also saw some original villains, trying to follow in their footsteps. The surge of multiple incarnations of Ghostface going after Sidney, not only highlighted the genre’s weaknesses but also invited a cynical outlook towards the slasher movies. The cynicism of the audience after Scream inspired the filmmakers to combat that outlook.
