12 Unsettling Monsters Of Cabin In the Woods Explained In Detail!
The Cabin in the Woods is a slasher horror flick with more to it than meets the eye. It is easy to dismiss it as just another stereotypical slasher, but the effect was purposeful, in order to bring out the best of the thought-provoking narrative. Director Drew Goddard is no dummy, having been involved with films like The Martian and Cloverfield as the producer. He uses an excellent cast comprising of Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Jesse Williams, Anna Hutchinson, and others in a film that will stay with you long after you are done watching.
The story is based in a universe where the classic horror flicks and their iconic villains are real. The movie places a meta focus on explaining just why slasher movies follow a certain formula. Now you can understand why there was a need for the stereotypical slasher narrative! Without giving spoilers, all we can say is that the movie deals with ancient Gods and monsters who reside under the Earth. Human sacrifices are necessary from time to time to keep them quiet, and a designated committee looks after the matter, ensuring that victims from time to time are available to be slaughtered by the monsters. But there is a specific pattern to the sacrifices: it must include a whore, an athlete, a virgin, a scholar, and a fool. In this movie, Jules is the whore, Dana the virgin, Holden is the scholar, Marty is the fool, and Jules’ boyfriend is the athlete. All the conventions of the genre you might expect are here: Jules disrobing, the group splitting up, and many violent killings. The climax, however, will leave you shaken – turning predictability completely on its head. The cabin is actually just a façade, designed to allow for the ritualistic killings to take place in their specific order. The mayhem is all carefully controlled by the committee watching from below, from a facility housing some of the most terrifying creatures imaginable. The staff below place bets on which monster will be chosen to hunt down the victims, each horrific entity or group being summoned by interacting with a different object in the cabin’s hidden cellar.
